Rhode Island Publishes Its Rules. Inc Authority Does Not Publish Its Renewal.

Bias declaration. The company writing this, Rhode Island Registered Agent.co, sells a competing resident agent service for $99 a year and profits whenever a reader switches. Everything below is checkable, which is the only reason to trust a page like this one.

The Free Year Is Not a Gimmick

Set the company up through Inc Authority and twelve months of agent coverage arrive at zero cost. No hidden charge, no discount dressed up as a giveaway. For a founder at launch, a year of a legally required service costing nothing is simply a good offer, and we are not going to pretend it is a trick.

The issue is a single number that comes after it.

Three Questions, Two Answers

Before handing money to any provider in this category, a buyer should be able to answer three things.

What does the first year cost? Zero. Published, unambiguous, easy.

What does the second year cost? We could not establish it. No recurring figure appears in Inc Authority's public material anywhere we could reach it, and we went looking specifically for it in July 2026.

Where would you find out? Almost certainly at a checkout screen, or spoken aloud by a salesperson on a call. That is a legitimate way to run a business. It is also a way of arranging things so the question gets answered only after you have committed time to the process.

Every other name in this market can be priced from a chair, in a few minutes, without talking to anyone. This one cannot.

Rhode Island Went the Other Direction

Which is a striking contrast, because the state regulating your company publishes essentially everything.

It prints its fees. It prints its forms. Your entity record is open to you at no charge, showing which name currently occupies the resident agent line. And it publishes the eligibility rules in statute: R.I. Gen. Laws § 7-16-11 sets out who may hold the role, an individual living in Rhode Island or a business entity of the usual kinds formed here or authorized to operate here, at a Rhode Island street address rather than a post office box. Resident agent is Rhode Island's own term for the job everyone else advertises as registered agent.

There is nothing in that statute you have to phone anyone to learn. You can read it, decide whether a candidate qualifies, and act. The state has done the disclosing.

Then it does something further. Each year, in the run-up to February 1, the state posts a courtesy notice about the annual report to whichever company holds the agent appointment. Rhode Island has wired its own warning system through whoever sits on that line, which is a good reason to know exactly what that line will cost you every year, from a page rather than from a phone call.

Both of Our Numbers, Here, Now

Year one: $99. Year two: $99. Year ten: the same $99. There is one service and therefore one figure, and you are reading it before you have given us anything.

Moving Off a Free Agent Arrangement in Rhode Island

$20 and Form 642, filed with the Division of Business Services either on paper or through the state's online business filing system. It wants your entity name and identification number, the incoming agent, and that agent's Rhode Island street address. Our change of agent page covers the details.

The trap specific to a free arrangement is that nothing marks the ending. There is no final invoice, so the day the coverage stops feels like an ordinary day. And whatever happens inside a vendor's system, the Rhode Island record keeps naming the same agent until a statement changes it.

Treat those as two jobs. Get us appointed first, confirm on the state's record that the resident agent line reads our name, and deal with the old account afterward.
