They do not run a low first year that jumps later. $249 is the figure, this year and next, and we found nothing resembling an opening discount.
Straightforward, expensive, honest about being expensive.
Two Ways a Recurring Charge Can Work
Rhode Island and LegalZoom handle recurrence in opposite ways, and the contrast is instructive.
The state wants $50 a year from your LLC. Before it wants that money, it puts a courtesy reminder in the post, ahead of February 1, telling you the filing window is about to open. You then decide to act. The money moves because you moved.
LegalZoom's $249 renews on its own. That is the published mechanic, disclosed plainly, and there is nothing improper about it. It simply means the charge repeats whether or not you have thought about it recently, which is the opposite of how the state next door in the same transaction behaves.
Most owners never re-examine an auto-renewing line item. That is precisely what makes them valuable to sell.

How to Leave LegalZoom in Rhode Island
The state's half costs $20 and takes one filing, Form 642, the LLC statement for changing your resident agent or its address. Download it, or work through the Rhode Island Business Services Online Filing System. Either route ends at the same place: the Division of Business Services inside the Rhode Island Department of State.
What the form wants is short. Your entity name and identification number, the name of the agent coming in, and the Rhode Island street address where that agent can be reached. A post office box will not do. The departing agent does not sign anything and cannot object.
Now the sequencing, which is the part worth getting right when you are leaving a subscription. Cancelling a LegalZoom account and changing a state record are two different acts in two different systems, and doing the first does nothing to the second. Rhode Island keeps listing the name it was given until a statement arrives telling it otherwise.
